NATCHITOCHES, La. -- A truck driver traveling through Natchitoches Parish recently took a detour to jail after deputies say they found pounds of marijuana on his big rig. The traffic stop on Interstate 49 near Natchitoches was the result of a joint investigation by the Natchitoches and Sabine sheriffs' offices focusing on the transportation and distribution of drugs through their parishes. Vincent L. Carter, 48, of Dallas, Texas, was stopped for a traffic violation, and deputies said they suspected criminal activity. So, NPSO K-9 Roka was brought to the scene to do an open air sniff. Roka alerted to the presence of drugs, which gave deputies probably cause to search the 18-wheeler. Deputies found several vacuum sealed bags containing about 18.5 pounds of marijuana and $7,208 in cash. Carter, who is on felony federal probation, was arrested and booked into the Lasalle Corrections Center on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, improper lane usage and federal probation violation. The investigation remains active and ongoing. Involved in the arrest was Sabine Parish sheriff's TNT agent J. Steinke and the Natchitoches Parish sheriff's Drug Enforcement Unit.
