A hunter from Conroe is safe and sound after being reported as missing for several hours on Wednesday evening in the Angelina River National Forest, west of Jasper.

The volunteers of the Jasper County Emergency Corps were sent to the Boykin Springs Area , just off of Highway 63, shortly after 11:00, when friends and family members reported that 51 year old Vince Wilkinson, who had been camping and hunting in the area was missing.

Members from the corps, along with game wardens from the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife and deputies from the Angelina County Sheriff’s Department searched the area, but were unable to find Wilkinson.

Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety were contacted and within a short time a helicopter equipped with heat seeking infrared cameras arrived at the scene and within a short time located the missing hunter around 2:00 am.

JCEC member Billy Williford said Wilkinson, who had become lost in the woods, braved the weather as the cold front came through and built a small fire to stay warm. Williford said that in the end Wilkinson was cold and wet, but ok.
