Burkeville Fire Chief Charles Duckworth says thankfully there were no injuries when a house exploded Tuesday morning. Unfortunately, however, the home was completely destroyed. It happened shortly after 9:00 on County Road 2053, commonly known as St. John Road, about 3 miles south of Burkeville off of Highway 87.
Duckworth said “We’re 100% sure that it was a propane leak, but so far we haven’t figured out the ignition source.” Duckworth also noted that the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office has been requested to investigate, along with the Texas Railroad Commission because the incident involved propane.
According to Duckworth the home was owned by Ray Ramsey, but no one was at home at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, it’s being reported that the explosion was heard and felt by people several miles away.
The Burkeville, Newton, and Trout Creek Fire Department's all worked the scene. Duckworth said Burkeville firefighters were on the scene all day and they were finally able to return to their station at about 5:00 p.m.
