Homeless man set fire that nearly ignited a furniture store, employees said he has done this before

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Jasper firefighters worked quickly on Tuesday afternoon to douse a fire that was spreading across pine straw and dry grass and came within a few inches of igniting the back wall of a business.

It happened shortly after 3:00 between Ashley Furniture and Jasper United Pentecostal Church on Highway 190 at Farm to Market Road 252.

Employees of Ashley Furniture said it was a homeless man who set the fire, and they noted that it was the second time that he has done this. He had fled the scene before firefighters arrived.
