Firemen were dispatched to the location about four miles east of the Jasper-Newton County Line on Highway 63, shortly before 5:00 on Wednesday afternoon, when it was reported that a large woods fire was burning and actually crossing the road at times.
Firemen from the East End Fire Department at Holly Springs along with the Burkeville Fire Department and the Texas Forest Service are batling the blaze in almost zero visibility due to smoke.
Firemen arrived to find the fire covering a large area on. the south side of the highway. However, embers were carried by the southerly winds to the north side of the roadway. However, firemen were able to hit most of those hot spots before they spread.
Not only was there danger from the fire but also the very poor visibility that was estimated to be less than 25 feet at times.
The section of highway between the Jasper-Newton County line and the Farrsville community was opened to traffic at about 6:30 pm. However, firefighters remained on the scene to put out hot spots and prevent the fire from rekindling.
A firemen said he believed the fire might have been sparked by a fallen power line and workers from the Jasper-Newton Electric Cooperative were on the scene.
Burkeville Fire Chief Charles Duckworth was on the scene in his normal "take charge" mode, directing most of the battle.
