If you’re planning a trip to New Orleans, drivers beware that you better not speed on the 18-mile-long Interstate 10 Atchafalaya Basin Bridge between Lafayette and Baton Rouge because new high-tech devices will soon be installed to monitor the time it takes for you to cross.
The bridge is two lanes eastbound and westbound and due to a narrow shoulder and width it’s dangerous for law enforcement to monitor traffic and make traffic stops.
Instead, the State of Louisiana will soon be installing cameras at each end that will measure the amount of time it takes for each vehicle to cross the bridge. The speed limit on the bridge is 60-miles-per-hour for private vehicles and 55-miles-per-hour for commercial vehicles.
So, if a private vehicle crosses the bridge in less than 18 minutes, or if a commercial vehicle crosses the bridge in less than 19 minutes and 38 seconds, the registered owner will receive a speeding ticket in the mail. Additionally, the fine will be doubled due to the bridge being classified as a “Highway Safety Corridor” because of the high number of fatality accidents that occur on the bridge.
The order to install the cameras and timing devices was recently signed into law by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards. There’s no word on how soon the system will be installed and go into operation.
