Georgia-Pacific, the largest employer in Sabine County, has announced a major modernization project for their operation in Pineland, and work is expected to begin in early 2022.
The company plans to invest $120 million for additions and improvements to the mill, known as the Pineland Lumber Complex, and which the company refers to as one of their premier sawmills in Texas.
Georgia-Pacific says the modifications will include a new sawmill to replace the existing stud mill, which was built back in the 1960s. The company says they will increase their capacity from a current amount of 380 million board feet of dimensional lumber each year to 450 million board feet, enough to build 30,000 homes per year.
Also slated for expansion is the log storage yard with a new debarking and log processing line.
Company officials also say that a continuous dry kiln will help with production capacity along with a new high-speed planer to replace the current equipment that has been in use since the 1960s.
Additionally, the company says that the mill will increase the number of log truck deliveries from their current amount of about 250 per day up to about 300 per day.
The Pineland facility is one of a dozen lumber mills across the country owned and operated by Georgia-Pacific.
