Four dead in collision between 18 wheeler and side-by-side in Hardin County

Four people died and another was injured in an accident involving an all terrain vehicle and a 18 wheeled tractor trailer truck on Friday evening in nearby Hardin County and a second accident that occurred as emergency workers were responding to the scene.

Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Rod Ousley tells KFDM/Fox 4 News five people were on the side-by-side. Three men and one woman died at the scene. The survivor, another woman, suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to a Houston Hospital.

The judge says all of the victims are from Hardin County and that he has ordered that autopsies be performed.

The DPS says the collision was reported at about 11:30 p.m. on Farm-to-Market Road 92 near Jim Burns Road, several miles north of Silsbee and south of Fred.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates the driver of a commercial motor vehicle was traveling south on FM 92. It is reported the driver of a utility vehicle (UTV) pulled out from Jim Burns Road in front of the commercial motor vehicle and was struck. After emergency responders arrived, a secondary crash occurred when the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu drove through the crash scene and struck a Hardin County patrol unit that was sitting stationary with its emergency lighting on. Deputy Ramsey Droddy wasn't hurt, according to the DPS.

The driver of the commercial motor vehicle, identified as 34-year-old Arthur Jones of Houston, was transported to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver involved in the secondary crash, identified as 44-year-old Kristy Biggs of Spurger, was transported to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
