COUSHATTA, La. – A former guard who was on duty when two teens died by suicide at a youth corrections center won’t spend any time behind bars. Jhanquial Germarrio Smith, 33, of Coushatta, was sentenced Monday in Red River Parish District Court to 2-1/2 years probation. He also was fined $2,000. Smith pleaded guilty to malfeasance in office in July in connection with the deaths of Solan Peterson, 13, of Haughton, and Jordan Bachman, 17, of Denver, Colo. Both died of suicide days apart in February 2019. During sentencing, District Judge Luke Mitchell said Smith used poor judgment by not checking on Solan and didn’t need to take all the responsibility for what happened. During her victim impact statement, Solan’s mother told Smith she may have forgiven him, but she hoped Solan’s death haunts him for the rest of his life since she has to life with the pain the rest of hers. She was unable to get through her entire statement. Smith was arrested in 2020 along with another guard, Marvin Ray Rogers, 30, of Coushatta. Rogers died in 2021 in car crash in Red River Parish. Smith and Rogers were on duty at Ware Youth Detention Center when Solan Peterson and Bachman died. An inspection by the state Department of Children and Family Services revealed the guards had not been performing required checks the nights the two teens died. Multiple other violations were cited. Inspectors said both suicides could have been prevented. The state Office of Inspector General concluded in a report released in April that Ware is a safe and secure environment.
