A former sheriff of Jasper County has died. Roscoe Davis, who served as sheriff from January of 1993 to 1997 passed away on Tuesday at his home in Morgan Mill, a small community in Erath County, southwest of Fort Worth. Prior to serving as sheriff of Jasper County, Davis who was 89, had spent many years in the Texas Department of Public Safety, starting out as a trooper and later becoming a Texas Ranger until his retirement from the state agency. Davis's successor, former Jasper County Sheriff Billy Rowles said upon learning of his death, "He was a good man. I respected him a lot. The only way I beat him was the fact that he was being sheriff 24 hours a day and I was retired and had time to campaign, and he didn't." Funeral services for Roscoe Davis will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am at the Morgan Hill Community Center and a reception will follow at 12:00 noon.
