Fires Update

Sabine Parish Fires Are Contained; No Outside Burning Update, Tuesday, August 15, 2023, 9:45AM - The fires east of Florien are contained at this time. A command center is set up at the Florien Fire Station. There is water and food available to anyone displaced by the fires. The preliminary cause of the fire appears to be a spark from a downed utility pole on Mount Carmel Cutoff. We have reported estimates of 2,100 acres burned, 10 inhabited homes, 8 other structures, and some vehicles were lost in the fires. There has been no loss of life and no injuries. The LA Department of Agriculture and Forestry have aircraft monitoring the situation and assessing the damage. There are multiple fire districts from other parishes here to assist if needed. There have been some minor flare-ups, but no threat to life or property exists at this time. Changes in the weather and winds could cause more flare-ups in the area. The current state-wide burn ban remains in effect and will be for several weeks under these dry conditions. We caution and warn residents there is to be no outside burning. Citations with be issued to anyone caught burning anything in any way in Sabine Parish. It is a very dangerous and dry situation everywhere right now. Sheriff Aaron Mitchell has been in the area assisting residents in any way he can since these fires started. The Sheriff's Office continues to help and protect the citizens of Sabine Parish.
