Firemen respond to numerous calls on Tuesday evening

Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning were busy for local firemen and most of the calls were a result of the weather. It all began shortly after 2:00 on Tuesday afternoon when firemen and other emergency crews were dispatched to the far west end of Farm to Market Road 139, when it was reported that an elderly couple had been involved in a minor accident. The driver of the ATV, Nelda Martindale, 84, of Jasper was taken by ambulance to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital where she was treated for a broken arm and later released. The passenger of the vehicle, former Jasper Postmaster Donice Martindale was not injured. Shortly after 10:00 on Tuesday evening, the Beech Grove Firefighters were dispatched to a rural location on County Road 140 when it was reported that a vehicle had left the road and hit a tree during the heavy rains. No injuries resulted from the accident. Shortly after 11:00 on Tuesday evening, the volunteers of the Angelina River Fire Department were dispatched to a home on Highway 63 west, not far from the intersection of Farm to Market Road 1747 when a woman who lived at the address reported the smell of smoke in her home following a possible lightning strike. The firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished a small electrical fire that was burning in a central air conditioning unit. Local firemen also responded to several reports of trees that had fallen on Tuesday and Wednesday.
