Fatal crash occurred Monday afternoon in Newton County

A woman is dead and a man had life-threatening injuries after a crash in Newton County on Monday afternoon. It happened shortly after 3:00 on Highway 87 just north of Farm to Market Road 253 in the Devils Pocket Community.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the 85-year-old woman from Orange was driving a 2023 Buick Enclave SUV when she tried to do a u-turn and she pulled out into the path of an 18-wheeler which hit the driver side of the SUV.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and her 90-year-old male passenger, also from Orange, was taken to St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for treatment.

The truck driver, 58-year-old Joseph Mwangi, of Willis, had non-life threatening injuries.
