Family member says bicyclist struck by vehicle remains in critical condition

A family member of a man who was struck by a vehicle as he rode his bicycle on Monday night has given an update on his condition. Holly McNorton, who is related to the bicyclist, 33-year-old Randle McShan, of Burkeville, says that he remains in critical condition in a Lufkin hospital and he underwent surgery in an attempt to repair his shattered right ankle. The incident occurred at about 8:3o on Farm to Market Road 3413 near the Westlake Community. Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Shana Clark said McShan was riding the bicycle on the highway when he was hit by a 2015 Jeep Patriot, driven by Hunter Montes, 18, of Jasper. Clark said both the bicycle and the Jeep were traveling southbound and the driver of the Jeep slowed down to pass the bicycle, however, she said the bicyclist went into the path of the Jeep as it was passing.
