Early Morning Woods Fire is Thought to be Arson

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

A woods and brush fire that begin in the early hours of Monday morning west of Jasper is thought to have been intentionally set.

The volunteers of the Beech Grove Fire Department were dispatched to the location on County Road 101, about a half mile west of County Road 99, shortly before 2:00, when it was reported that the fire was slowly moving through the woods.

The Beech Grove Firefighters arrived at the scene and soon faced the problem of how to get to the fire, which was in a thick part of the woods. However, the firefighters used machetes and whatever they could to fight their way through and extinguish the blaze.

Before it was over, a brush truck, a pumper and a tanker were all at the scene and used to battle the fire, which was estimated to have covered about ten acres. However, no injuries resulted from the incident.

Beech Grove Fire Chief Jamie Gunter later said that the circumstances surrounding the fire were suspicious and that he believed it to be a case of arson. However, who set the fire and why is still unknown.
