DPS says Lufkin teen was nearly 130 mph in crash that killed him and a 71-year-old woman

A report issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety following their investigation into a deadly May 19th crash says that a Lufkin High School senior was traveling nearly 130 miles-per-hour. Lance Modisette, 18, died at the scene of the wreck on Highway 259 near Nacogdoches. He was scheduled to graduate from Lufkin High School just a few days later. The other driver, 71-year-old Sherry Randall, of Nacogdoches, was very critically injured and she died on May 27th in a Nacogdoches hospital. The DPS report also noted that Randall had undergone an undisclosed medical procedure that day, and she had been advised to not drive. Additionally, someone who knew her said that she was on numerous pain medications. The report said Randall was driving northbound on Highway 259 and had slowed, or possibly stopped, as she was preparing to make a left turn. Meanwhile, the report said that Modisette was also driving northbound with a passenger, and the passenger told investigating troopers that Modisette was driving 100-120 miles-per-hour when he topped a hill and came upon Randall’s slowed or stopped vehicle and the two cars collided. However, the report said troopers reviewed the computer in Modisette’s car which recorded the 5 seconds of time before the wreck. It showed that Modisette was accelerating to nearly 130 miles-per-hour, and after hitting the brakes his car had slowed to 106 miles-per-hour at the moment of impact. The report also said the passenger told troopers that Modisette had been drinking. An autopsy was ordered and toxicology tests will determine if Modisette was impaired in any way.
