The Texas Department of Public Safety released additional information concerning the officer involved shooting that occurred on Saturday near Kirbyville stating that officers arrived to find the deceased wielding a gun in altercation with a teenaged boy, before aiming the weapon at the officers, forcing a State Trooper to draw his weapon and fire, killing the man. The statement by DPS said that at approximately 6:08 p.m., the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in reference to a domestic disturbance involving a suspect with a gun. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Kirbyville Police Department, and a Texas State Trooper responded and observed the suspect and a 14-year-old juvenile in a physical altercation with a gun outside of the residence. Officers gave orders to disengage and to drop the weapon, and once the juvenile disengaged, the suspect pointed the weapon at the officers. The name of the deceased has not been released. However, KJAS has learned that the 36 year old man was reported to be wielding a .410 shotgun, who officers had apparently dealt with earlier in the day. Officers with the DPS say that as is standard procedure, the trooper that fired the gun has been placed on administrative leave following a complete investigation into the incident. The original call for help went to the Jasper County Sheriff's Department, which immediately dispatched officers to the scene. Dispatchers said family members told them the deceased who was armed, had told them that he members that he planned to commit suicide by police, meaning he wanted an officer so shoot him. However, it appears that even though a deputy was in route it was the State Trooper and a Kirbyville Police Officer who heard the call and were first to arrive at the scene.
