We’re learning more about the young Shelby County deputy who was killed in a Tuesday morning crash in San Augustine County. Matthew Pierson, 25, died when his patrol car hit the trailer of an 18-wheeler. The Etoile Fire Department, where Pierson was a volunteer firefighter, has released more information about the young man, and we’ve learned from them that he was killed on just his second day on the job with the sheriff’s department. Pierson just recently graduated from the law enforcement academy. The fire department also said that along with being a firefighter, Pierson was also the department’s public information officer. The Etoile Fire Department’s Facebook post said “…he was extremely helpful. He took on jobs willingly and without any drama. Matt was super smart and very witty. He actively posted information on the VFD Facebook page, made posters and flyers, and took great pictures. You may have seen him last Christmas, accompanying Santa through the community.”
