Crash followed by an auto-pedestrian accident in Kirbyville

Emergency responders in Kirbyville had their hands full late Thursday afternoon dealing with an accident and then an auto-pedestrian crash. It occurred shortly before 5:00 on Highway 96 in front of Weaver Motor Company. Just as Kirbyville Police Officer Ashley Arce was arriving on scene, she reported that a vehicle hit one of the victims who was standing on the highway. Police Chief Paul Brister later said that it began when a small car and an 18-wheeler were both southbound and traveling side-by-side. Brister said the driver of the big-rig drifted into the other lane and hit the small car. According to Brister, the man driving the small car stopped and got out to check the damage, and as he was standing behind his car a man driving a pickup truck hit the man, crushing him between the front of the pickup and the car. The pedestrian was flown by medical helicopter to St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, while the driver of the pickup was taken by a friend to Jasper Memorial Hospital. Chief Brister said the names and ages of those involved would be available on Friday morning.
