The Jasper City Council has awarded the position of City Manager to Greg Kelly, who has been serving in that position on an interim basis since the retirement of Denise Kelley in January. The decision came after a closed-door executive session during a special called meeting on Tuesday evening. District 1 Councilman Marcus Barber made the motion which was seconded by Ronnie Sample, and when put to a vote it passed unanimously with the exception of District 3 Councilman DeMarcus Holmes who was absent from the meeting. Council also approved a proposed slight increase to the current property tax rate, bumping it up from $0.2313 to $0.2691. It doesn't mean that it will be the new tax rate, but rather will be the proposed tax rate when city leaders begin putting together the 2024/2025 budget. This comes after Mayor Anderson Land said on Monday that the City of Jasper is facing the possibility of finances going into the red. During the executive session, Council also discussed the City Attorney position which is currently held by Michael Stewart Ratcliff. When Council reemerged into open session, Mayor Anderson Land never asked Council for any motion on the matter.
