Convicted felon found in possession of a firearm and large amount of meth

Jasper Police Chief Garrett Foster says a Sunday night traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a previously convicted felon who was in possession of a firearm and a large amount of methamphetamine.

Foster said an officer stopped a GMC Terrain on Bowie Street at Lamar Street and saw 51-year-old Tyrone Grant in a rear passenger seat. Along with being a convicted felon, Foster said Grant is also known by the Southeast Texas Violent Crime Task Force as a narcotics trafficker.

Chief Foster said officers tried to do a pat-down search on Grant, but he became uncooperative and officers had to wrestle him into custody. At that point they found that he had a loaded handgun, over 70 grams (2.4 ounces) of methamphetamine, and items used in the distribution of drugs.

Grant was arrested and charged with Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
