Burkeville dog attack victim recovering as sheriff says action taken against dog owner

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Burkeville dog attack victim Shelly Engel is continuing to recover as Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby says action has been taken against the owner of the dogs. The 19-year-old was attacked by a pack of sixteen dogs on Sunday morning at the intersection of Highways 63 & 87 in Burkeville. Engel shared photos of her injuries with our news partner, KFDM 6 News in Beaumont, and she also said that she returned to Jasper Memorial Hospital on Wednesday night to receive one of the tetanus shots that doctors advised her to have. Sheriff Burby says the owner of the dogs, who as identified as Alicia Ferguson, received a citation this week and was warned that she needed to contain her dogs, along with reminding her of her responsibility under Texas law when a dog is considered dangerous.
