The Brookeland Lady Cats traveled to El Campo High School on Tuesday night to face off against the McMullen County Cowgirls in a regional semi-final match up in the third round of the UIL Girls Basketball Playoffs. After a slow start the Lady Cats began to flex their muscles, pulling away for a 32-point victory, 78 to 45.
In the opening quarter after falling behind by eight points the Lady Cats began to start firing on all cylinders. The Lady Cats hit four 3 pointers in the quarter and 13 of the long-range shots to overwhelm the Cowgirls. At the end of the first quarter Brookeland led by 9 points 23 to 14. In the second quarter the long-range shots continued to fall as the Lady Cats added 4 more 3 pointers on their way to out scoring the Cowgirls 20 to 8 in the quarter to take a 21 point into the halftime locker room.
In the third quarter both teams were more evenly matched, but the Lady Cats still out scored the Cowgirls in the quarter 17 to 14. The Lady Cats led by 26 points 60 to 36, heading into the fourth and final quarter. Once again, four more 3 pointers by the Lady Cats were part of 18 total points in the quarter to the Cowgirls 10. The Lady Cats, other than a brief couple of minutes at the start of the game, were in complete control throughout the game. The Girls from McMullen County which is located in Tilden, Texas northwest of Corpus Christi came into the game with a 30 and 5 record and were one of only four teams left competing in the region.
Carlee Justice led the Lady Cats scoring with 25 points including 3, 3-point shots. Kaylee Morgan who also had 3, 3-pointers in the game scored 18 points and Kaeyn Strothers had 3, 3-pointers as she was in double figures with 11 points. Gracelynn Lopez had 8 points with 6 points coming from 2, 3-pointers, Elizabeth Lundquist had 6 points on 2, 3-pointers and Cierra Justice rounded out the scoring adding 6 points.
The Brookeland win coupled with a Broaddus win over Nueces Canyon 74 to 26 sets up the same rivalry match up that occurred on Monday night when the Brookeland and Broaddus boy’s teams met in the bi-district round at West Sabine High School. The details of the game, when and where will be determined. Part of the consideration is the fact that the Brookeland boys will be playing Jonesboro in the Area Round of the playoffs after they defeated Richland Springs 52 to 51.
The Brookeland coaches were able to accommodate games by both teams early in the week on Monday and Tuesday, but getting the Jonesboro boys to play on Thursday when Brookeland played on Monday might not be possible. But regardless, if the games do end up on the same day, then KJAS will have the boy’s game on the radio at 107.3 FM and the girl’s game will be broadcast on the live streaming audio on KJAS.com.
KJAS will make the details of the games available just as soon as they are confirmed by the Brookeland coaches.
