There’s bad news regarding news; the Newton County News has announced that they are shutting down the presses after providing news and information to the citizens of Newton County since 1884. A statement from the news entity said “There are many factors involved, but the main reason we are closing is personal health concerns and the decline of business in Newton”. The Newton County News is one of several small town news operations that have folded in recent times. In September of last year, the Buna Beacon closed down after 32 years in business. Meanwhile, the Texas Press Association says that in the last four years, approximately 40 newspapers have closed in Texas, citing an economic downturn in small towns and rural areas. Earlier this year, the Buna Beacon, also a weekly newspaper announced that it was ceasing operations. On Tuesday, Mike Lout, the owner of Rayburn Broadcasting Company and KJAS.COM announced that his company plans to try and fill the void by expanding coverage to both Newton County and South Jasper County. Lout said the company was seeking reporters to cover stories in those areas.
