The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department says a deputy shot and killed a suicidal woman who came at officers with a gun on Tuesday evening. The incident began shortly before 7:00 at a house in the Pitkin Community, about 23 miles southeast of Leesville.
According to Sheriff Sam Craft, the deputies responded to a report that 44-year-old Chantel Myers was threatening to harm herself and had already fired one shot in the house along with writing a suicide note.
Craft said Myers refused to come out of the house and shouted threats to deputies.
When she finally came out of the house, Craft said deputies tried to talk her into laying down the gun, but instead she advanced on them resulting in a deputy opening fire and killing her.
