There has been yet another attempted burglary of the ATM machine at Sabine State Bank on Highway 63 in Burkeville, but this time the would-be thief found the machine empty and still out of order from the last time it was hit.
Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby says that his deputies responded shortly after 7:00 Monday evening to the bank when the ATM alarm was tripped. Burby said deputies arrived to find that the ATM doors had, indeed, been tampered with. Burby noted that the ATM doors were closed with zip-ties due to the damage from the last attempted burglary.
According to the sheriff, security camera video showed a male in what appeared to be a white Chevrolet high country series pickup truck. Burby is asking anyone in the public who recognizes the man or the truck to call his office at 409-379-3636. You do not have to give your name.
Meanwhile, Sabine State Bank officials announced last month that the Burkeville branch would be closing its doors at the end of the year. This comes after numerous burglaries and attempted burglaries of the ATM machine, and most disturbingly a June 2014 armed robbery in which the manager, Trudy Woods, was stabbed.
The last day of operation for the Burkeville branch of Sabine State Bank will be Friday, December 31st
