AVOYELLES PARISH, La. (KALB) - An Alexandria man has been arrested following a two-vehicle crash that killed a lawn mower operator in Avoyelles Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

LSP said Romero H. Roberto, 34, of Alexandria, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado north on Hwy 1 near the Echo community on August 3 around 9 p.m. He then left the road and hit a 2013 Kubota (lawn mower) on the northbound shoulder.

The lawn mower driver was identified as Rickey G. Maddox, 59, of Alexandria. Maddox had severe injuries from the crash and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Roberto was arrested on August 4 for vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated (first offense), careless operation, no driver’s license and an expired license plate. He was processed at the Avoyelles Parish Detention Center.

While Roberto was not wearing a seatbelt, LSP said he had no injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
