The Alabama-Coushatta Indian Tribe has announced the death of Principal Chief Herbert G. Johnson, Sr. Chief Johnson died Monday following a brief hospital stay. However, the announcement didn’t elaborate on why the Chief was hospitalized.
The 79-year-old had lead the tribe since January 1st, 2020 in the position called “Mikko Choba Skalaaba” by the Native American tribe located between Woodville and Livingston.
In statements issued by tribe officials, Communications Director Debrina Sylestine-Dirden said “It is with profound sadness that the Tribal Council of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas reports that the Tribe’s Mikko Choba Skaalaba passed away.”
Tribal Chairperson Nita Battise said “Our Mikko Choba Skaalaba was an inspiration for us all. He was always respectful of all people and listened carefully before forming a decision. His leadership and guidance were a great asset to the Tribe and he will be deeply missed.”
Chief Johnson succeeded former Chief Mikko Colabe III Clem Fain Sylestine, who died at the age of 91 in May of 2019.
