Texas Governor Greg Abbott was in Dallas on Tuesday where rioting, violence, looting, and general mayhem has been heavy in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in recent days. Abbott, meeting with local officials, said in a press conference that while the First Amendment right to protest will be protected, criminal activity will not be tolerated.
What began as protests across the country over what is generally believed to be the murder of Houston native George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis, Minnesota Police quickly devolved into death and destruction in several major cities.
Governor Abbott echoed the general sentiment of Americans. Abbott said “The death of George Floyd was clearly a horrific act of police brutality. We must ensure that something like that won’t happen here in Texas. Millions of people are seeking justice for Mr. Floyd’s death, and they are rightfully angry.”
Abbott said that he has sent over 1,000 state troopers into the cities of Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio, and also he has sent hundreds of troops from the Texas National Guard into the DFW Metroplex.
