A recent NSU graduate beat the odds when he walked across the stage last month after a life-threatening situation.
Flint Greer, a Grant Parish native, always had a heavy workload, helping his dad care for more than 20 animals, being a big brother, and a student.
Instead of letting load overwhelm him, the teenager, at the time said it never discouraged him from his future plans.
“In 2014, I planned on going to NSU from the get-go,” Greer said. “I didn't know in what, either general studies or criminal justice."
After graduating from Grant High School, Greer chose to study criminal justice at Northwestern State University.
"I started off as a good mediocre student, making A, B honor roll for the first two semesters and then after that, it just started declining a little bit," Greer explained.
As the young college student dealt with a falling grade point average, he also began getting frequent, severe headaches something he didn't take serious, especially because his dad got sick soon after.
That’s when Greer had to step up as the man of the house.
“I pushed school to the side, so for me, it meant just focus on the main priority and that was taking care of my dad so that he can recover and for me just to take care of his stuff for him."
While his father recovered with time, the failing NSU student was still having daily migraines.

After a couple of doctor visits, Greer was diagnosed with Glioblastoma.
At the age of 22, the young adult was admitted into surgery to have a tennis ball-sized tumor removed from the right frontal lobe of his brain.
Just three months after surgery, Greer began taking classes again to finish his last couple of semesters.
On December 20, 2019, in the same way, he reached for the cancer bell, he reached for his tassel.
Greer said he couldn’t have accomplished this goal without God, his wife, and his family.
