Beauregard Parish man arrested after law enforcement pursuit

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

A Beauregard Parish man was arrested following a pursuit on Monday. According to Sheriff Mark Herford, the series of events began during the noon hour when deputies responded to the residence of Jonathon Mitchell, just east of DeRidder, when smoke was reported coming from the structure. The sheriff said deputies arrived first and entered the house to see if anyone was inside. He said they didn’t find anyone, but they did find drugs. Herford said deputies learned that Mitchell was at his parents’ home on the same property. However, he said when they encountered him, Mitchell refused to get out of his vehicle, resulting in deputies firing pepper balls into it. The sheriff said Mitchell then took off driving with deputies chasing him in a pursuit that lasted about an hour before going into DeRidder. Herford said at that point they terminated the chase for safety reasons. Herford said Mitchell then called 911 and told dispatchers that he was going to Fort Polk, so a deputy stayed behind him and followed to the gate of the Army Facility. When he arrived, the sheriff said they were able to get him into custody. The sheriff says charges against Mitchell are pending.
