A jury has been seated and testimony has begun in the Matthew Hoy Edgar murder trial in Sabine County. The 24-year-old is accused of the October 31st, 2020 murder of 19-year-old Livye Lewis, who prosecutors say was shot to death with a rifle.
In the first day of testimony, we’ve learned what investigators say was happening in the hours leading up to Lewis’ death.
Daily News & More is reporting that following opening arguments from prosecutor Kevin Dutton and defense attorney Roy Hughes the prosecution began calling law enforcement officers to the witness stand.
In their testimony, officers said that their investigation revealed that both Edgar and Lewis were at a party and an argument began over Lewis conversing with another man. The testimony also said that after everyone had left the party, Lewis was driving to Hemphill when Edgar caught up to her.
The report said investigators testified about finding Lewis dead with a gunshot wound to the neck on Farm to Market Road 83, about 2.5 miles east of Hemphill, and also finding Edgar in the same area lying in the fetal position and bloody.
The Daily News & More report said officers testified that Edgar was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he reportedly told them that he remembered drinking on a porch and awoke in the ambulance.
Investigators also testified that Edgar cried when they told him that Lewis was dead.
Testimony continues in Sabine County before State District Judge Jim Payne.
