Newton County Sheriff Billy Rowles said Tuesday that he was investigating the discovery of human remains which were found in a wooded area south of Newton.
Rowles said he and others went to the location, near the intersection of Highway 190 and County Road 4025, shortly around 3:30 pm, when a hunter reported that he had found a human skull. Rowles said he and other officers arrived at the scene and after examining the skull, searched the area, where they found at least three additional bones.
Rowles said the investigation was continuing as he and others search for additional bones and evidence as they try to determine of the identity of the human remains and what caused the death.
Rowles said other agencies, which were assisting in the search and investigation, included Newton Police and the Texas Rangers.
