Search for Matthew Edgar Continues, Sheriff Says They’re Following Every Lead

Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox on Tuesday issued an update regarding the search for convicted killer Matthew Hoy Edgar. The 25-year-old remains on the run after he failed to show up in court for the fourth day of his murder trial on Thursday, January 27th, 2022.

The trial continued and that afternoon, the jury convicted Edgar in absentia of the October 31st, 2020 murder of 19-year-old Livye Lewis, who was shot to death with a rifle just east of Hemphill. The following day, the jury sentenced Edgar to 99 years in prison.

As for the search for the fugitive, Sheriff Maddox said that his department is continuing to investigate leads in the case, which so far have taken deputies to locations in northeast Texas, western Louisiana, and Hardin County.

Maddox said Tuesday “Additional leads are pending resolution, at this time and as those leads are completed and additional information becomes available, additional press releases will follow.”

If you know anything about the location of Matthew Hoy Edgar, you’re asked to call the Sabine County Sheriff’s Department at 409-787-2266, or call your local law enforcement agency or 911. You do not have to give your name.

Sheriff Maddox also stressed to the public that if they happen to encounter Edgar, do not contact him or attempt to stop him, but instead notify law enforcement immediately.
