Pineland native Teresa Weatherspoon has been named Assistant Coach of the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. She is now one of only a handful of women who have served in coaching roles in the NBA, and she’ll serve under recently hired Head Coach Stan Van Gundy.
Teresa was an Olympic Gold Medalist and is also a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. She became a basketball star at Louisiana Tech in the mid to late 80’s and later with the WNBA’s New York Liberty beginning in the late 90’s. Following a seven-year career with New York, she later returned to Louisiana Tech where she was the women’s head basketball coach for five years.
Teresa is the daughter of Charles and Rowena Weatherspoon, and she’s a cousin to Jasper native Sean Weatherspoon, who played college football at the University of Missouri and later in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons.
Teresa has also written a book. In 1999 she penned “Teresa Weatherspoon’s Basketball for Girls”, which offered anecdotes and advice for young girls to improve their basketball skills.
