One Dead and Two Flown Out After Major Accident North of Newton

One man is dead and two other people were seriously injured in a Thursday morning accident on the north side of Newton. It happened shortly after 9:00 on U.S. Highway 87 North at Farm to Market Road 2626.

Although the crash occurred inside the city limits of Newton, it was investigated by Texas Department of Public Safety State Troopers.

According to DPS Sergeant Stephanie Davis, 68-year-old William Hall, of Newton, was westbound on FM 2626 in a 2001 Nissan car and he pulled out onto Highway 87 into the path of a northbound 2013 Dodge pickup truck, and the truck hit the driver-side of the car.

Hall was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Mike Greer.

Meanwhile, a passenger in the car, Barney Simmons, 59, also of Newton, and the driver of the truck, Mason Garcilazo, 27, of Aransas Pass, were both flown from the scene in medical helicopters to St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

Captain Melanie Smith of the Newton Fire Department said that the section of Highway 87 at the crash site was shut down until shortly before the noon hour.
