Newton County Voters Defeat $12M Bond Proposal to use Old Prison

Newton County voters on Tuesday defeated a bond proposal which, if passed, would have funded the transformation of a former prison into a building for county government use.

Newton County Judge Kenneth Weeks said that the plan was to convert the defunct private prison on Highway 87 north of Newton into a building to house the Newton County Sheriff’s Department and Jail, and also for use by certain other county government offices.

The $12 million bond proposal failed with 868 (62.49%) votes against, and 521 (37.51%) votes for.
