New Information Released Following Discovery of Woman’s Body in Newton County

Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby released new information about the discovery of a woman’s body on Monday, and he says that foul play is not suspected. The body was found in a wooded area next to Highway 87 and just south of the Devil’s Pocket Community.

On Wednesday, Burby said it was utility workers who found the body, and an inquest was performed by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Brenda Smith.

Burby said the body was taken to the Jefferson County Forensic Medical Center in Beaumont for autopsy.

According to Burby, she has been identified, but the only information released about her is that she is about 20 years of age.

Burby said although foul play is not suspected, the death remains under investigation by his department along with the Texas Rangers.
