Beaumont Police say a mother is listed in critical condition and her child is deceased after a Wednesday afternoon drowning incident in downtown Beaumont.

According to police they responded at about 2:30 to the 700 block of Crockett Street to the lake next to The Event Centre. Police say they first recovered the woman from the water, and they recovered the 3-year-old child a short time later.

Both were rushed to a hospital where the child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Meanwhile, the mother remains in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit.

There’s no word on how the two ended up in the water and their identities have not yet been released.
