Man Dies in Early Morning Fire in Jasper

A man is dead following a house fire that occurred early Wednesday morning on the east side of Jasper.

The volunteers of the Jasper Fire Department were dispatched to the 1300 block of Milam Street, just a few hundred feet from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, shortly before 1:00, when it was reported that the single-story wood frame structure was on fire and arrived to find the home completely engulfed in flames.

Jasper Fire Chief Brandon Duckworth said that after the fire was out, firemen found the body of a deceased man inside the home. Duckworth said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Jasper County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Raymond Hopson, who later identified the victim as Rexie McMullen, 57, of Lufkin.

Judge Hopson ordered an autopsy, which was being conducted in Jefferson County.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, Duckworth said he believed the fire began on the front porch of the home.

The home was reportedly owned by the estate the late Erma Anderson.
