Maddox Says Search for Edgar has Gone as Far as NM & MO

Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox issued a statement late Wednesday evening to give an update on the search for convicted murderer Matthew Hoy Edgar. Maddox said that the search for the 25-year-old fugitive has now gone as far as the states of New Mexico and Missouri as his deputies continued to follow some 16 leads in the case.

Maddox has also said that locally, the search has led them to parishes in western Louisiana, as well as counties in northeast Texas and the Golden Triangle.

Additionally, Maddox said that Wednesday’s statement would be the last issued by the Sabine County Sheriff’s Department unless and until there is a significant development in the case.

Matthew Edgar was last seen on Wednesday, January 26th which was day three of his trial for the October 31st, 2020 murder of Livye Lewis. He failed to show up in court the following day, and that afternoon the jury convicted him of murder, and the following day sentenced him to 99 years in prison.

As of the posting of this update, the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office continues the search for Matthew Hoy Edgar, who was sentenced by a jury, to 99 years, in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division for the murder of Livye Lewis on October 31, 2020.

Edgar had failed to show up for trial on Thursday, January 27, 2022. His trial continued in his absence through his attorney. Edgar’s whereabouts have been unknown, since and there is an active warrant for his arrest which come out that Thursday.

The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office has completed upwards of 16 leads regarding the whereabouts of Edgar which involved Western Louisiana parishes, North and East Texas counties, the greater Beaumont, Texas area and locations in New Mexico and Missouri. There are additional leads pending coverage at this time and all are currently being investigated.

The sheriff’s office did contact other law enforcement partners throughout Texas and Louisiana in its efforts to locate Edgar or clear some of these leads.

This will be the last daily update regarding this matter from the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office. As the search continues for Edgar, any additional updates, will be provided to the media as warranted.

Sheriff Maddox would like to remind residents should they encounter Edgar to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (409) 787-2266, or through 911, to report the encounter. He requested that residents do not contact him or attempt to stop him, but rather call the Sheriff’s Office.
