Machete Wielding Man Shot After Vernon Parish Deputy Cut

A machete wielding man was shot by a Vernon Parish deputy late in the weekend after he cut the officer. According to Sheriff Sam Craft and Detective Rhonda Jordan, it happened at about 5:30 Sunday evening at a house on Norris Kay Road, about 4 miles west of Leesville.

Craft said deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on 46-year-old Malcomb Holcomb, but he began threatening them with the machete. According to Craft, the deputies and a bail bondsman who was also at the scene all deployed tazers, but they had no effect on the man.

Craft said Holcomb then cut one of the deputies in the rib cage area, and the deputy then shot him twice.

Craft said Holcomb underwent surgery for his gunshot wounds at Rapides Parish Hospital. There’s no update on his condition. Meanwhile, Craft said the deputy suffered a non-life threatening wound from the machete and is still undergoing treatment.

The sheriff says that Holcomb will be charged with one count of Attempted First Degree Murder, one count of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, one count of Resisting by Force, and one count of Aggravated Assault. His bond has been pre-set at $350,000.00
