A Kirbyville High School teacher was arraigned on Thursday morning and is now officially charged with Improper Relationship Between an Educator and Student. Erick Paul Scott, 42, of Kirbyville, appeared before Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mike Smith, who denied bond on the charge.
KFDM 6 News confirmed through local officials on Thursday that Scott, who taught Criminal Justice, has now resigned from his job.
According to Jasper County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan, the investigation began earlier in the week when officials at Kirbyville CISD began looking into “word of mouth” information about allegation against Scott. Duncan said School Resource Officer Larry Armstrong, the Kirbyville Police Department, and Jasper County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant James Payne all began investigating.
Duncan said the alleged victim, a 17-year-old girl, was interviewed on Monday.
Duncan said the teacher was met at the doors of the school when he showed up for work on Tuesday morning and was told that effective immediately he was on administrative leave. Duncan said the teacher then reported to the sheriff’s department where he was interviewed by Investigator Payne.
According to Duncan, information gathered in the interviews resulted in an arrest warrant being issued, which was executed late Wednesday afternoon at his residence.
Duncan also said that investigators suspect the possibility of the existence of video or photos related to the case, so he said two cell phones were seized and will be forensically examined.
