Judge Waiting for Preliminary Autopsy Results from Inmate Death

The office of Jasper County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Jimmy Miller is waiting for preliminary autopsy results to return from the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office following the death of an inmate in the Jasper City Jail.

As of late Thursday afternoon, autopsy results had not yet returned on 28-year-old Steven Mitchell Qualls, of Colmesneil.

According to Jasper Police Lieutenant Garrett Foster, Qualls had been discharged from Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital on Monday evening, and he was arrested a short time later at the hospital on a public intoxication charge.

Foster said Qualls was placed into the detoxification cell, and at about 8:45 Wednesday morning he was discovered to be unresponsive. An ambulance crew determined that he was deceased, and he was pronounced dead in the jail cell by Judge Miller.

Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers are investigating the in-custody death.
