Jasper County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan issued a warning to the public on Tuesday that an old familiar scam has popped back up again. Duncan said area residents are reporting that they’re receiving calls from scammers claiming to be with the sheriff’s department and telling the would-be victim that they have a warrant for arrest.
Duncan said the scammer then instructs their intended victim that they need to pay their fine by purchasing a “Green Dot” card or some other type of pre-paid card and then provide them with the card information.
According to Duncan, the scammers are going so far as to actually use the real names of Jasper County deputies, and also they have sound effects in the background that sound like an actual 911 communications office.
Duncan said if you receive one of these calls, do not give the caller any information and hang up the phone.
