Jasper Police Captain Mike Poindexter has confirmed that the death of a baby is under investigation. Poindexter said the infant was pronounced dead in the Jasper Memorial Hospital emergency room shortly after 10:00 Saturday morning by Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Brett Holloway.

We do know that the child was a resident of Jasper, but Poindexter said no other information was immediately available.

A detective and an evidence technician responded to the hospital and were later at a residence in the northern part of the city.

Lt. Garrett Foster said Monday that he and others did not known what caused the death of the child and that he and others were waiting on the results of an autopsy in hopes of answering that question.

Foster said it was the department’s policy to investigate the death of all young children.
