Weeks after a Bossier City man was shot and killed, his family says they still want to know the details of what happened.
Richard Williams, 26, died on Feb. 10 after his family says he mistakenly tried to get into the wrong house.
The homeowner could see the man who was trying to break in and warned him to stop. He looked him in the eye. A single deadly shot was fired.
Getting that early morning phone call was something Yulonda Snow said she’ll never forget. She learned her son was shot and killed next door to his cousin’s house.
“Nunu, his wife was on the phone, and she said that he’s gone, he’s gone, he’s gone auntie. I told her no, no, no, no, no,” Snow said.
Williams’ family says after a night out drinking they believe Williams went to the wrong home.
Around 5:20 a.m., police say Williams tried to get into the house that’s next door to his cousin on June Lane.
“Lord Jesus, he has took a piece of my womb do you hear me,” Snow said.
“Why wasn’t the guy arrested?” asks Williams’ stepfather Anthony Snow.
The reason: Louisiana’s stand your ground law.
According to Bossier Parish District Attorney Schuyler Marvin, Louisiana has one of the strongest versions of this law in the nation.
“If the person that gets shot is in a place that they don’t legally have a right to be, like attempting to enter into your home without being invited into your home, or attempting to burglarize your home, obviously without your consent that person doesn’t have a legal right to be where he or she is. And, the person with the gun, the homeowner in this case subjectively feels that his life is in danger and that deadly force is necessary. So, it’s not an objective standard, or what a normal person would think under the same circumstances. It’s what that guy felt that night in his mind,” Marvin said.
If the shooter feels it’s necessary to use deadly force, the DA says they can do so without being prosecuted.
