Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby says an autopsy has been ordered after a fisherman’s body was recovered in water early Saturday morning where the man had been fishing on Friday.

According to Burby, deputies were called out shortly after 11:00 Friday night when Johnny Sampson, unknown age, was reported missing at Big Cow Creek near Highway 87 and Farm to Market Road 1416 in the Trout Creek Community. Burby said Sampson was fishing near the bridge and his pickup truck was located nearby.

Burby said Sampson’s body was recovered a few hours later at 1:30 Saturday morning in the water near the bank and close to where his fishing gear was located.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mike Greer.
